Why read Western art
Much of the theatre, painting and design we know today can be traced back to the long river of Western art. We read it not in order to worship a distant place.
but because — once we understandhow the Greeks thought about fate, how the Renaissance rethought the human being, and how France turned beauty into life, we can read today's world more clearly and find our own way of seeing.
The Pearl Salon reads the West with an open mind and studies the East with the same spirit. The two are not opposites but two mirrors reflecting one another.
Three sources of light
Three eras and three spirits together lit up how Western civilisation imagined beauty.
In fifth-century BC Athens, tragedy was staged in open-air theatres. It let an entire city-state contemplate together the deepest human questions — fate, choice and responsibility.
Greek tragedy moves us because it refuses to offer easy answers. In the fall of its heroes we see the limits of human beings, and also their dignity. That honesty about human nature is still the root of theatre art today.
In fourteenth- to sixteenth-century Italy, art awoke into brilliance. Painters and sculptors studied the human body, light and perspective anew, pouring their confidence in the human being into every work.
At the heart of the Renaissance liesThe humanist spirit— a belief that human reason, feeling and creativity deserve to be taken seriously. It changed not only art, but also the way people saw themselves.
The French contribution was to bring beauty out of the palace and into daily life. Fashion, design and taste were refined here into a culture at once exquisite and everyday.
